I have a question on our first assignment. Question 3A and 3E are highly similar, I would like to know what specific things we should focus on when we are answering them. Thank you.
for 3a, I would focus primarily on the histogram. however, just because a histogram is symmetrical, does not mean it is normally distributed (e.g. could be bimodal). for 3e, you can assess by all three plots: histogram, boxplot and Q-Q plot.
As Ann noted, distributions may be symmetrical without being normal.
Skewed distributions are neither symmetrical nor normal; however, issues of kurtosis and modality (as well as skew) must be considered in the determination of normality.
