Question on titles...

On homework 3, I missed a point b/c I left out the various specific variables in the title as they were included in the table...however, I've been told that it is redundant to say something like "Speed Predicted by Anxiety, Time Constraint, etc" in our time IF anxiety, time constraint, etc. are the variables listed in the table on the left most column...could someone please clarify so I know which to do?

Thanks!!

You actually have to include every variable pertains to the table in the table title.

I'm confused with what situation you were told that your table title was redundant, can you explain a little bit further?

If we put say weight in pounds in the title, then put weight in the variables, can we put weight = weight in pounds in the note or is it redundant since we put in the title?

Well, it depends on how long your variable names are. For example, if you have "Height in inches, Height in foot, and "Weight in pounds", they are not long names, you can simply put down the entire name on the variable column. If you have "Psychotherapy first session score" as one of the variables, it's a long name, you may want to put its short form on the variable column and explain it in table notes. If you variable name is "weight in pound", putting "weight" in the variable column and explain "weight = weight in pounds" in table notes will not be redundant. However, it will be redundant if your variable's name is "weight" and put "weight" under variable column and illustrate "weight = weight in pounds" in table notes. Hope this helps!

Actually that makes no sense at all to me. How is the last example redundant? Nowhere else did you put weight in pounds, so how is redundant to put in in the note?

I'm still confused...please be aware that table titles are confusing and we've been given mixed messages on these!

I think we are asking 2 separate questions here.

1) What should we include in table title?

2) Why the last example shows rundundancy?

Answer:
1) You should include every variable name in your title. (There is no hard and fast rule about table titles but just list everything to play it safe). For example, you have "calorie intake", "metabolic rate", and "hours of exercise" predicting "weight", the table title should be "Weight Predicted From Calorie Intake, Metabolic Rate and Hours of Exercise"... and you cannot say "Weight Predicted From Various Variables". Nikki, when did you get the comment on redundancy?

2) The last example is redundant because when the real name of the variable is "weight", including "in pounds" (the measurement unit) is unnecessary and extra... so you should not add additional words to its original name. No specification is needed because there is one weight variable.
