levels of moderation

Hello, I hope it's not too late to ask this question...

For categorical moderators, what does it mean exactly when you regress the outcome on the predictor for each level of the moderator? Would they be separate simultaneous multiple regressions where you regress predictor and level 0 of the moderator on outcome, and regress predictor and level 1 of the moderator on outcome?

You will probably get a better and more complete answer during the day from someone smarter and more awake, but just in case...

In a moderated model where the moderator is categorical (e.g., sex) you would run two regressions, regressing the outcome on the predictor for each level of the moderator. So in this case, you would run separate regressions for males and females.

To answer your question: in SPSS you would have to either "split file" into males and females or use "select cases" to run a regression (the outcome regressed on the predictor) only looking at men and then another one only looking at women.

Then, to check to see if you have a moderated model, you would compare the unstandardized Betas of the two separate regressions. If they are different, you have evidence of moderation. That is, the amount of effect of the predictor on the outcome is dependent on the level of the moderator. In this case, the effect of your predictor on the outcome would be different for males and females.

I hope that helps... if it doesn't, sorry Mari, TA's and fellow student!
